Nutritional Genomics

Nutritional Genomics is the overarching term that encompasses Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics.  These two terms are often used interchangeably but are in fact fundamentally different.

Nutrigenetics is concerned with how the inheritance of a particular gene variant might affect an individual's response to a particular nutrient or diet.

Nutrigenomics looks at how a nutrient or diet might affect the expession of an individual's genes.

Both areas of research are interested in how these two concepts affect a person's metabolism, health status and risk of disease.

Nutritional Therapy is already a very personalised type of nutrition consultation but when you add Nutritional Genomics into the mix, you get a powerful combination that allows the therapist to tailor their advice uniquely to you.  After the human genome was mapped in 2003, it opened up a world of exciting possibilities for the future. Nutritional Genomics is still in its infancy but more and more is being understood about the complex interactions between nutrients and our genes every day.

Corinna Venturi is a BANT registered Nutrigenetic Counsellor and can offer consultations that will be geared towards your specific genotype.

What can you expect when you purchase the Nutritional Genomics package?

This intensive 3 month package begins with two lab tests.  1) a genetics test using a saliva sample and 2) a NutrEval test using a blood and urine sample to show precisely your current nutritional status.  At this time you will also be asked to complete an indepth nutritional and medical history questionnaire.

Why do we use the NutrEval test and questionnaire alongside genetic testing?

We do this because genetic testing is just part of the picture.  Understanding what genetic polymorphisms you have only tells us your tendencies, it doesn't tell us whether you are expressing those tendencies.  To understand that, we need to understand you as an individual.  To tailor our advice specifically to you, we need to know your genetics (using genetic testing) and how epigenetics (using NutrEval, questionnaire and consultations) have expressed your genetic tendencies.

Your genes load the gun; epigenetics pulls the trigger.

Just because you have a certain genetic polymorphism, doesn't mean you're necessarily expressing it.  However where you are displaying symptoms, we will be able to help you positively modify your epigenetics.

The Nutritional Genomics package includes 3 one-to-one consultations, 1 every four weeks.  In addition, you will have access to your therapist in between consultations via email/telephone to answer any questions you may have about your plan.

Finally, everything discussed with your therapist will be used to create a unique nutrition and lifestyle plan just for you.  This plan will include information and recipes to help you to implement your specific health changes.
